Westminster Larger Catechism

69 questions · 124 citations

The Westminster Larger Catechism (1647) is the fuller of the two catechisms produced by the Westminster Assembly. Where the Shorter Catechism was intended for catechizing children, the Larger Catechism was designed for public exposition — a pastoral and theological amplification of the Confession and the Shorter Catechism.

Its 196 questions cover the same ground in greater depth: the doctrine of God, the covenants of works and grace, the person and offices of Christ, the application of redemption, and the duties of the moral law. Its treatment of the Ten Commandments is especially full, giving positive duties and forbidden sins under each command and reasoning from the letter of the law to its full moral implication. It was received with the Confession and the Shorter Catechism as a doctrinal standard of the Church of Scotland and the American Presbyterian churches. AskCredo cites the Larger Catechism on questions requiring more detailed confessional exposition, particularly around the law, the sacraments, and the ordering of duties.
