What is biblical inerrancy?
AskCredo

Biblical inerrancy is the teaching that the Scriptures, in their original autographs, are entirely truthful and without error in all they affirm. This conviction rests upon the character of God, who is truth itself and the divine author of the Bible.

📖 The Divine Origin of Scripture

Because God is the Author of Scripture, the Bible is invested with His own divine authority. As affirmed in the 1689 LBCF Ch.1 §4, the authority of Scripture dependeth not upon the testimony of any man or church, but wholly upon God, who is truth itself. This mirrors the Belgic Confession Art.3, which states that the Word of God was not delivered by the will of man, but by holy men who spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. We receive the Bible as inerrant because it is the very Word of the One who cannot lie.

✨ A Gracious Revelation

Inerrancy is not merely a theoretical doctrine; it is a vital necessity for our salvation. Because we are finite and sinful, we could never know the mind of the infinite God unless He revealed it to us. The Bible contains the marks of the divine mind, providing a sure guide for faith and life. As the Apostle Paul writes, 2 Timothy 3:16 tells us: 'Every scripture inspired of God is also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness.' This perfect, God-breathed word is the only rule of faith and obedience, ensuring we are not left to our own flawed reason.

You
Why does it matter for the Christian faith?
AskCredo

Biblical inerrancy matters because it protects the integrity of the gospel as the only infallible rule for faith and life, ensuring we hear God's voice rather than human opinion. Reformed traditions hold that Scripture is the supreme judge of all controversies and the final authority to which our faith is resolved, thereby grounding our hope solely in the promises of God.

📖 The Only Rule of Faith and Obedience

If the Scriptures contained errors, they could not serve as the 'only rule of faith and obedience' (Westminster Larger Catechism Q.3). Because God is truth itself, His Word must be perfectly truthful. We look to the 1689 LBCF Ch.1 §10, which declares that Scripture is the supreme judge for all religious controversies. If we were to view the Bible as errant, we would inevitably place our own fallible reason or the opinions of men above the Word of God, stripping us of our only sure footing for salvation and sanctification.

🛡️ A Foundation for the Gospel

Inerrancy is vital because the gospel itself is communicated through these texts. As Paul writes to Timothy, 'All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness' (2 Timothy 3:16-17). We are all 'more sinful and flawed than we ever dared believe,' and if the document that reveals our need for Christ and His perfect work for us were untrustworthy, our assurance of acceptance in Him would crumble. We trust the Bible because it is God-breathed, making it our safe and sufficient guide to the grace that saves us.
