Free Church of Scotland

Free Church, Free Church Scotland, Wee Frees
A — Broadly Reformed

Overview

The Free Church of Scotland is the continuing body of the 1843 Disruption, when Thomas Chalmers and hundreds of Scottish ministers left the Established Church rather than allow the civil power to intrude on Christ's headship over His church. The Free Church subscribes to the Westminster Confession, the Larger and Shorter Catechisms, and the Directory for Public Worship. AskCredo places the Free Church in the A-tier as a broadly Reformed Presbyterian body with a serious confessional heritage, though its 2010 permission for the use of hymns and instruments in worship remains debated among its own people.
