The Orthodox Presbyterian Church took shape in 1936 when J. Gresham Machen and other conservatives withdrew from the mainline PCUSA rather than tolerate its growing Modernism and its silencing of faithful missionary boards. The OPC subscribes with strict fidelity to the Westminster Confession and Larger and Shorter Catechisms, governing through presbyteries committed to the ordinary means of grace — preached Word, Lord's Supper, baptism of covenant children, and biblical church discipline. Though small, the OPC remains one of the most confessionally rigorous Presbyterian bodies in North America and stands in AskCredo's S-tier as a benchmark for Reformed orthodoxy.
