What is total depravity and why does it matter for the Christian life?
AskCredo

Total depravity teaches that every aspect of human nature—will, understanding, and affection—has been corrupted by the Fall, rendering us unable to choose God apart from His grace. Recognizing this truth is vital for the Christian life because it humbles us, ensuring that all praise for our salvation belongs to Christ alone.

📖 The Reality of Our Corruption

Total depravity does not mean that every person is as evil as they possibly could be, but rather that every part of our being is touched by sin. We are 'dead in sin' and, as the 1689 LBCF Ch.6 §4 states, we are 'utterly indisposed, disabled, and made opposite to all good.' This condition is a result of our connection to Adam, and it means that by nature, we have no capacity to seek after God. As the Canons of Dort Head 3/4 Article 3 explains, without the regenerating grace of the Holy Spirit, we are neither able nor willing to return to Him. This doctrine exposes the reality that we are more sinful than we ever dared believe, leaving us completely dependent on divine intervention.

✨ The Gospel Antidote

The beauty of the Christian life is found in the contrast between our total inability and Christ's finished work. Because we are 'dead in sin' and possess 'wholly lost all ability of will to any spiritual good' (1689 LBCF Ch.9 §3), our salvation cannot be a cooperative effort. It is entirely a work of Sola Gratia. When we realize that we were 'made alive together with Christ' even when we were dead, we are moved from moralism to genuine gratitude. You are more accepted and loved in Christ than you ever dared hope because He did for you what you could never do for yourself.
