Who Is Jesus Christ?

Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, who became true man in order to be the one mediator between God and man. He is our only Redeemer, having saved His people from their sins through His life, death, and resurrection.

The Person of Christ

Jesus Christ is uniquely both God and man. According to the Small Catechism Q.7, He is the Son of God, true God and man. This mystery of the incarnation—where the eternal Son assumed a human nature—is essential to our salvation. The Westminster Shorter Catechism Q.21 describes Him as the only Redeemer of God's elect, who continues to be God and man in two distinct natures and one person forever. As noted in Hebrews 1:1-3, He is the brightness of God's glory and the express image of His person, having purged our sins by Himself before sitting down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.

Our Only Mediator and Savior

The name 'Jesus' signifies 'Saviour,' for as the Westminster Larger Catechism Q.41 teaches, He is called Jesus because He saves His people from their sins. The Heidelberg Catechism Q.29 adds that we ought not to seek, nor can we find, salvation in any other. Because we are, by nature, dead in trespasses and unable to keep God's law, we rest entirely upon the finished work of Christ. As the Apostle Peter declares in Acts 4:12, there is none other name under heaven that is given among men, wherein we must be saved. You are more sinful than you ever dared believe, yet more loved in Christ than you ever dared hope.
