Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod

WELS
A — Broadly Reformed

Overview

The Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) is the most theologically strict of the major American Lutheran bodies, organized in 1850 and drawing together German Lutheran congregations in Wisconsin. WELS subscribes unconditionally to the Book of Concord, practices close(d) communion, ordains only men, and maintains a rigorous distinction between the visible fellowship of confessing congregations and other Christians with whom doctrinal agreement has not been established. AskCredo places WELS in the A-tier as a confessionally Lutheran body whose rigor places it firmly within the historic orthodox stream, with the usual Reformed/Lutheran differences on baptism and the Supper.
