Can a Christian be demon-possessed?
AskCredo

In the Reformed tradition, it is understood that the Holy Spirit dwells within the believer, which makes the indwelling of a demon in a Christian fundamentally impossible. While believers may still struggle with temptation, the world, and the flesh, they are securely held by the power of God, who ensures their final perseverance.

🛡️ The Indwelling Spirit

The primary argument against the possibility of a Christian being demon-possessed is the doctrine of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. As Matthew 12:28 demonstrates, the coming of the Kingdom of God involves the binding of the 'strong man' by the Spirit of God. Once the Spirit has taken up residence in the believer, that 'house' belongs to the Lord. While the Canons of Dort Head 4, Article 4 acknowledges that believers can, through negligence or the weakness of the flesh, fall into grievous sins, this is distinct from being 'possessed' or controlled by an outside spiritual power. Our security rests not in our own strength, but in the promise of God to preserve His people.

👑 Christ the Victor

The gospel tells us that Christ has spoiled the house of the strong man (Matthew 12:29). When a person is united to Christ by faith, they are transferred from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of His marvelous light. To suggest that a child of God could be possessed would be to suggest that Christ has surrendered His temple to the enemy. While scripture records instances of intense demonic activity—such as in Luke 8:27-28—these represent the condition of those outside of Christ. For the believer, the battle against temptation and the flesh remains very real, but it is fought by a new creation who is 'more accepted and loved in Christ than you ever dared hope.'

What does Scripture teach about demonic possession and how does it differ from demonic oppression?
AskCredo

Scripture demonstrates that demon possession involves a foreign spirit inhabiting a person's physical and mental faculties, whereas oppression involves external temptation or spiritual harassment. Because the Holy Spirit indwells the believer, Reformed theology maintains that a child of God cannot be indwelt by a demon, though they remain subject to the pressures of the world, the flesh, and the devil.

📖 The Reality of Possession

In the accounts of the Gerasene demoniac, we see the terrifying reality of possession: a state where a person’s faculties are seized and dominated by an unclean spirit, resulting in loss of autonomy and great suffering. As described in Luke 8:29-30, the man was driven by the demon, bound with chains, and recognized by his own name as 'Legion' because many demons had entered him. This illustrates that possession is an internal subjugation. Jesus’ authority is supreme, however; at His command, the spirits are cast out, as seen when they were allowed to enter the swine and subsequently perished in the water, fulfilling the prophecy of their defeat in Luke 8:33.

⚔️ Possession vs. Oppression

While Scripture does not use the modern theological term 'oppression,' it clearly depicts believers facing external spiritual hostility. The 1689 LBCF Ch.17 §3 notes that believers may fall into grievous sins through the 'temptation of Satan and of the world.' This is distinct from possession, which is a total takeover. In Luke 11:24-26, we see the danger of an empty heart that is 'swept and garnished' but lacks the presence of the Holy Spirit; the returning spirits find a dwelling there. By contrast, the believer is the temple of the Holy Spirit. If we struggle with sin, it is not because we are possessed, but because we are warring against our own remaining corruption. Our assurance lies in Christ, who preserves us even when we are wounded by temptation.
